This article will cover all the important considerations you need to see for dartboard setup measurements, board dimensions, available mounting options, basic lighting advice with possible flooring and safety considerations.
Let’s discuss it in two parts!
1st: Planning Out To Select The Best Location
Checkout For Available Space:
Find an open place for playing dartboard. There should be no obstacle in between and nothing should be like that may distract your mind while playing. Space needs to be 5 feet wide and 11 feet long. Keep this thing in mind that the throwing path should be clear from all types of obstacles. This will help you to retrieve the darts.
You also need a good amount of space for spectators and players. Additionally, The scoreboard should be beside the dartboard so that it is easily visible to everyone enjoying the game.
Preparing The Floor:
Depending on your budget, you may not have the opportunity to create custom floors for different dart games. However, you need to keep one thing in mind that the different materials can really damage your darts. The ideal way is to use the dart mats, which is a roll-out rubber mat that is designed to protect your darts as well as your walls.
Dart points can easily break at tile, concrete or stone floors. And if it is a wooden floor that can easily be punctured especially the area which is closest to the board.
The Floor Should Be Leveled
You should make sure that the floor is leveled. Some houses may slope over time and the flooring may wrap with the time. To ensure about the level of the floor before starting a game. But if you are using a dart mat that can help you to compensate for any irregularity by placing a cardboard or carpet even beyond the throwing area.
The Strategy of Placing A Dartboard
Select a place that is far from the traffic areas. Place a dartboard in a safe and isolated area. You should select an area that is far from the doorways and high traffic areas and the areas that are having breakable objects near to them.
You may not injure anyone passing through the path of darts. If there are any fragile and valuable things that can be damaged so, rethink about where you should place a dartboard.
Protect The Wall With The Protective Board
Depending upon the players, how professional the players are. Darts may not always hit the board. Use a protective board to safe the darts as well as the walls and the surrounding areas. According to your time and budget you can house your board by buying or creating a protective layer or cabinet.
Beginners usually miss the darts and if you are having a protective layer or cabinet than this can save your wall from being destroyed. This protective layer should be 3 inches wide and 4 inches high as you mount the dartboard in the upper center.

2nd: Hanging and Marking
Measure the bull’s eye and mark the wall:
The official rules state that the center of the bull’s eye needs to be approximately 5 feet and 8 inches high from the floor. The quality boards are hung from the center while the others are from the top.
If you are having a board that is hung from the top then measure the distance from the hanger to the center of the bullseye and then add 5 feet and 8 inches in it for the correct measurements to hang the board.
Mount the backing board disk:
Face the disk towards you and place the backing board disk at the back center of the board. Screw the center hole and then tighten it to make sure that it may not fall down while playing. Most darts have 3 other holes to securely fasten the board into the place.
Mount the wall bracket:
Place the wall bracket so that the center of the bull’s eye may be at the height of 5 feet and 8 inches from the ground. This wall bracket can be removed afterward as it is only placed to ensure that the other brackets are leveled. Use the level for the bracket and 4 C screws and then remove them when you came to know that all brackets are leveled.
Stabilize the board:
You can stabilize the board by placing the screw slightly higher than the bracket. Line up your dartboard by keeping the 20 scoring area vertically as you place the dartboard into the wall bracket. Make sure that the disk is attached.
Create the base throw line:
Make the throw line 3 feet wide and 7 feet 9.25 inches from the face of standard steel-tipped to set up or 8 feet for soft-tipped boards. You may use a tape or a piece of wood or metal or even a store-bought throw line sticker. Make sure that the throw line is perpendicular and centered from the face of the board.
HOW TO SETUP YOUR DARTBOARD AT HOME?
Your dartboard setup should be at the place of the house where you can throw darts in an easy and comfortable way. Without destroying anything of your house. The protection of things and people is the most important thing that should be kept in mind while playing and selecting a plane for dart.
You should consider it hanging onto a place where you can play for infinite hours back to back. Luckily, you can also set up your own dartboard and an optimal darting system that is not so much expensive and time-consuming.
Official dartboard measurements
You need to consider that if you have been practicing with wrong dartboard setup measurement it’s really not easy to practice all over again from the start after rearranging it, so the best advice is to make it right in the first place before starting to play darts!
Also, For decorating your wall and the custom dartboard surrounds, you also need to know the correct dartboard measurements. Additionally, You should pick an area that has plenty of free space and is free from all types of hurdles in the throw line. And some extra space to create a safe and comfortable environment for darting.
1. Height to the center of the dartboard
The height from the center of the dartboard or from the bull’s eye must be 5 feet 8 inches or 1.73 meters. This is the internationally recognized height for the steel-tipped darts as well as for the soft-tipped darts. Mount the board at the correct height before measuring the throw line.
2. Horizontal distance to the throw line
The official distance from the throwing line is 7 feet 9 ¼ inches and 2.37 meters, from the face of the dartboard. Keep this thing in mind that the distance is not measured from the wall. If you also know the thickness of the backing surface then you can easily estimate where to measure the throwing line distance from.
3. Diagonal distance to the throwing line
Find someone to help you, another way to find the throwing line distance is to calculate the diagonal measurement from the face of the dartboard. Have a person holding a tape from the center of the double bull’s eye and measure out diagonally to 9 feet 7 3/8 inches that is approx 2.37 meters.
If you are not having anyone to help you, you can use the horizontal approach with the correct measurements that should yield the same results.
4. Distance from the center of the bull to the Oche
If your dartboard has completely set up, then it is a good idea to measure the distance from the center of the bull to the throwing line oche. To make 100% sure about the calculations and measurements. If the distance shows to be 9 feet 6 inches than it means that all measurements are correct and the dartboard was setup correctly. The distance from the center of the bull’s eye to the throwing line can be measured as 115.35 inches, 2.93 meters.
5. Ladies throwing distance
Sometimes a question arises that what should be the throwing distance for ladies?? Know what should be the answer!! Generally, the throwing distance is the same as for males. There are many dart leagues in the UK that may differ for throwing distance. For example, 7 feet 6 inches to 7 feet 0 inches.
6. Wheelchair dartboard setup
Normally the dartboard height for a standing player is 173 cm. but the height for the wheelchair player is slightly lower than the standing player that is 137 cm. this is done by the Russ Strobel the founder of WDDA. He was successful in gaining recognition for the player of wheelchairs.
The use of these wheelchair setup rules are approved by the WDF and these should be used in all WDF sanctioned events where the Wildfire 137 dart frame concept is used.
The revolutionary Wildfire 137 dart frame was specifically designed for all the wheelchair players to avail the opportunity to compete directly with standing players.
7. Lighting For Your Dartboard Setup
Your dartboard setup is not complete without the proper set up of lighting. Many bars use a spotlight above the dartboard. The light can be mounted on the ceiling above the dartboard or slightly away from the dartboard. In such a way that it has a direct light on the face of the dartboard.
If the lighting is not sufficient that will allow the shadows to be on the dartboard. I want to mention one thing here that some of the cabinets come with a built-in lighting system.
